BACKSTROM: Kevin Reilly on Why This May be the Next ‘Great A-hole Protagonist for Fox’

BACKSTROM, the new Fox procedural that was picked up to series just last week, was a coup Fox Chairman of Entertainment, Kevin Reilly, was happy to boast about while talking with reporters after his Press Tour session during the network’s TCA day.
“We had it last year, the season before, and the script didn’t come together [and then it went to CBS this past season],” Reilly explained. “Look, I think it’s [another] great…asshole protagonist for Fox. I think it’s a great, outrageous, unconventional character, with [series star] Rainn [Wilson] as the perfect kind of guy [for that].”
And in addition to the series bringing an, um, distinctive character to television, it will also allow Fox the chance to launch another procedural.

Comments Off on ‘We Have Thoughts’ Vodcast: Danielle and Marisa Talk About the Best New Show, Characters, Twists, and More of the Season So Far
We’ve seen a good amount of content from the new shows, which means my friend/vodcast partner Danielle Turchiano (from Made Possible By Pop Culture) and I have fallen (hard) for some of the freshman series.
We sat down to debate the best new shows, the best new characters, the best twists/fall finales (for all shows), and, because it can’t be all happy, we also talk about the shows that disappointed us the most.
Take a look…
BONES: Stephen Nathan Teases the End of the Ghost Killer Arc
January 14, 2014 by Marisa Roffman
The Ghost Killer was just really properly introduced on BONES, but the end of the arc is already around the corner.
“We had such a long-running serial killer, that we didn’t want to do that again,” BONES boss Stephen Nathan told me at the Fox TCA party. “It would be a mistake to repeat — or try and repeat — [what we’ve done]. Pelant was on for a year and a half, almost. And before that, we would have three episode arcs or five episode arcs — the Gravedigger went for a while — but this is going to be very, very different in the way we’re handling this. She was a serial killer, but that doesn’t mean the killer is going to continue to kill.”
RAKE’s Peter Tolan Read His Journal at TCA: Take a Look at What Hilarious Tales He Told

Press Tour can be a bit of a wild card — no matter how good (or bad) a show might be, you never really know what a panel will be like until the cast and producers sit down in front of you and start speaking.
The RAKE panel today was going perfectly fine…until executive producer Peter Tolan was asked about working on Fox. What we didn’t know was that the reporter who asked had unknowingly set up the best joke as Tolan had brought along his “journal” to read his thoughts about working for Fox, which he then proceeded to hilariously dead-pan read to TCA members.
What came next not only caused Tolan to worldwide trend on Twitter, but it also had a whole lot of us laughing our heads off. Take a look a the transcript of what Tolan told us…

GLEE: Kevin Reilly on the Plans for the Show’s Final Stretch
January 13, 2014 by Marisa Roffman
As GLEE gears up for its final season and a half, Fox boss Kevin Reilly has teased a little bit of what the future will hold.
“We do have GLEE through next season, and it will be the final season,” Reilly told reporters after his Press Tour session. “[GLEE creator] Ryan [Murphy]’s pitched the arc all the way through next season. For the second half of this year, the kids will graduate. We will go to New York exclusively for the second half of the year. And then he’s got some fantastic ideas of what we’re going to do next year for the final year.”
And with graduation, that means there will be some unspecified cast changes.
