THE GOLDBERGS: Adam F. Goldberg and Wendi McLendon-Covey Tease the Royal Wedding-Inspired ‘The Facts of Bleeping Life’
October 8, 2014 by Marisa Roffman
THE GOLDBERGS is tackling one of the biggest moments of the ’80s in tonight’s brand new episode: the wedding between Prince Charles and Lady Di.
“That was a huge deal growing up,” THE GOLDBERGS creator Adam F. Goldberg acknowledged. “My mom waited up until 4 in the morning to watch it. I remember that. Her and her friends were obsessed with it. Every writer, when I told them to come up with ideas over hiatus, every one wrote, ‘How about a Royal Wedding/Princess Di episode?'”
And so, in tonight’s episode, the Royal Wedding inspires Bev and Murray to look at their own wedding, and debate the merits of renewing their vows.
“The episode is about renewing vows, which my parents always talked about doing,” Goldberg teased. “And my dad would say, ‘What is this, a magazine subscription? That’s it, we’re done.’ And so it’s really an episode about them [as a couple], which I don’t do a lot…those are harder. Stuff with me growing, those are easier to do. So I don’t do as much between Wendi [McLendon-Covey (Beverly) and Jeff [Garlin (Murray)]. So it’s refreshing, I think, to see them [lovingly] fighting and arguing…so it’s an episode about the two of them, and the kids are off on their own adventure.”
Of course, as Bev thinks about her dream wedding, things are bound to go a little haywire.
“With the way that Bev makes plans and overplans things, nothing ever happens the way she has choreographed it,” McLendon-Covey laughed. “But I will say, when I read we were doing that episode, I got so excited, because there was nothing more glamorous in the ’80s than that wedding. And we needed to believe this was a fairytale. Of course, in hindsight, it’s like, oh brother, how awful. But the way they carefully doled out the information to us, we needed to believe those two kids were in love and having a fairytale. It made us happy to look at that. I remember the mania all around it. And I love that Bev would get so caught up in that.”
“What happens is that this time, my dad, Pops, is going to pay for the wedding, which he didn’t do the first time around,” she continued. “Murray wanted to pay for it, and he was too proud to ask for any money, which is why we had a cash bar and a cash dinner. She’s going all out, because this is her princess moment and she has earned it. Does it turn out? You gotta see.”
