BONES: ‘The Woman in the Whirlpool’ Teases

When BONES returns on Thursday, the series will be deep-diving into the fallout of Brennan confronting Booth about his gambling addition (and subsequently kicking him out of their home).

Before the hour airs, I have a few teases (and thoughts) about “The Woman in the Whirlpool”…

  • When BONES started Booth’s relapse storyline, I had some concerns about how they’d handle it. What I said then — and still maintain — is that the final scene of “The Eye in the Sky” (where Booth truly relapsed, outside of the guise of undercover work) was the most genuine of the hour. Addiction is serious; a relapse can’t (or certainly shouldn’t) be fixed in one hour, and the show has acknowledged that. I respect BONES and its writers for not sweeping the issue under the rug and letting the unpleasantness linger. That being said, Booth and Brennan aren’t in a good place in the hour. He lied, she threw him out — it’s a dynamic we’ve never seen from the two. We’ve seen them angry at each other, we’ve seen them heartbroken, we’ve seen so many facets of what they mean to each other, but this is a devastation on another level.  (That being said, I don’t think it’s a a leap to say I have no doubt they’ll work it out, eventually.)
  • With all of the above said, it allows for some of the best work — individually, and together —  David Boreanaz (Booth) and Emily Deschanel (Brennan) have done in the show’s ten seasons. As much as their chemistry was (appropriately) different in episode 200, it feels as drastically different in “The Woman in the Whirlpool.” It’s incredibly impressive.
  • This scene isn’t actually in the episode.
  • Brennan and Angela share some quality BFF/mama time while out with their kids. Of course, given what’s going on with Booth/Brennan, it’s not filled with laughter and joy — it’s bittersweet.
  • The episode showcases something that even freaks Hodgins out.
  • Jessica and Aubrey embark on a strange — but character-appropriate — flirtation. In many ways, it feels like Sweets and Daisy 2.0. (That being said, the best part is Cam’s reaction to the situation.)
  • This isn’t a tease for the episode, but more a hope for future episodes: given Cam and Booth’s friendship, I do hope we get to see a bit of that relationship going forward as Booth deals with his recovery. (Please.)

BONES airs Thursdays at 8 PM on Fox.

And she still doesn’t give a crap WHY Booth relapsed..its all about her and Christine, it should be a part of it but not all of it….if they don’t get to the bottom of why Booth relapsed then how are they ever going to move past it. Brennan and her God Complex is so over the top.

Bones writer Emily Silver says scene with Booth holding Christine is from this episode.

Cathy she is helping him in the only way she can. By making him actually do the work needed to really be back in recovery. Believe me Brennan is not my favorite character on this show (or second or third favorite) but as is obvious in the clips from this episode Booth is just going thru the motions making it look like he is all better when he has not dealt with anything yet. She is being strong for both of them.

The radio silence from Stephen Nathan and Hart Hanson about these last 3 eps speaks volumes to me….I would be hiding too after just outing myself as a liar….the Bones fandom were PROMISED that they wouldnt separate B&B once they got to together that was it…but what do we get? Brennan not only kicking Booth out but they went as far as Booth getting a new place, so B&B have been apart for weeks if not longer….they are a married couple who live in separate homes and Christine is separated from her father, and before anyone wants to give me a fanwank response: ask Christine if she feels that her parents are separated, that her family life has been torn apart…and the sound you will hear is a resounding heartbroken YES….I would like to hear Stephen & Hart explain their lies & backtracking but then I remember how they still are in denial that they ever promised us a real and non-dream sex scene in the season S4 finale.

I am truly at a loss at the narrative choices Stephen Nathan has made since becoming showrunner: he separated B&B work partnership so much to the point that in some eps they only had THREE scenes together and now they he has separated them personally…why on earth would he separate B&B with only 3 eps remaining in the season with a finale ep to see them patch things up when he had NO renewal when he shot these eps? Why does he think so little of B&B fans that he would do that as a possible way to wrap the series?…I am beyond discouraged and disheartened with Bones right now *SIGHS* … moving on to this ep, again why are they retreading the Sweets & Daisy dynamic with Aubrey & Jessica, why are they so obsessed with pairing up the interns, esp Jessica first with Sweets & now his lite version Aubrey, cant anyone on Bones have a career at the Jeffersonian & enjoy being single?….Why do they only care about showing Brennan with squint support system, why do none of them ever reach out to Booth, checkin with him during his crisis, esp Cam? They show Booth being her friend when she needs him (Arastoo in Iran) but why isnt Cam stepping up when he needs her support? They have Cam react to Jessica & Aubrey but NOT BOOTH!? SMH… Why arent Angela or Hodgins reaching out to Booth? Am sure they are dissecting him behind his back, yet they dont give enough care to speak with Booth directly…S.Nathan spouts that Bones characters are family well he must mean an estranged one 🙁

When Hart Hanson handed the reins over to Stephen Nathan, Stephen has done his best to mess Bones up. He has not been good for Bones. I’m glad he wont be involved for season 11. A perfect example is Booth & Cam’s relationship. She has been his friend longer than anyone and knows first hand about his gambling addiction. She would be more effective talking to Booth than Aubrey.
I agree with you Amy. You stated it much better than I could. I love this show & I get very frustrated with the story of B&B. They don’t even touch each other. So much is missing about the love they have for each other. They expressed more intimate feelings for each other before they became a couple then they do now.
I’m worried, no telling what will happen in these last three episodes. I’ll be upset if season 10 ends with them separated. It’s not fair to the fan’s to keep us waiting all summer to find out if & when they get back together.
