2015 Emmy Nominations: Quick Reactions
July 16, 2015 by Marisa Roffman
The Emmy nominations are out, and as you might expect there are some great acknowledgments, some infuriating snubs, and some questionable life choices.
A few thoughts about the 2015 Emmy nods…
- Honestly, the thing that’s infuriating me the most right now is the total exclusion of JUSTIFIED. Realistically, I figured it would be hard for the show to take the top honors (even though it was one of the best — if not the best — drama this past year), but I figured Timothy Olyphant, Walton Goggins, and Joelle Carter would get nominations. Possibly the show as a whole. And the extraordinary guest cast. But nope. They didn’t even get acknowledged. Absolutely ridiculous, considering it was the show at its finest.
- Equally baffling is MASTERS OF SEX’s exclusion in the major categories. (Allison Janney and Beau Bridges did once again score guest actress/actor nods.) “Fight” was an incredible hour of television. Even if it doesn’t crack the top shows (which is a mistake), and Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan are also ignored (another mistake), you’re telling me there was no room in the writing/directing categories for that hour? Really?
- I am a bit surprised THE AFFAIR was snubbed. Not only did it win at the Golden Globes, but the ambition of the show was so grand I figured it would get something.
- Taraji P. Henson deserves everything for EMPIRE. Everything. And I know people are mad the show was shut out of the best drama race, but, really how was that show totally snubbed in terms of music?!
- Hey, it seems Emmy voters finally got around to checking out ORPHAN BLACK! Tatiana Maslany is doing something literally no one else on TV is…it’ll be interesting to see what comes next.
- BROOKLYN NINE-NINE’s Andre Braugher and UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT’s Tituss Burgess getting supporting actor nods is great.
- PARKS AND RECREATION had a hit-or-miss final season, but the nods for Amy Poehler and the series are deserved. (Though the overall lack of Nick Offerman is weird/wrong.)
- Sad, but not surprised by the lack of JANE THE VIRGIN, THE GOLDBERGS, RECTIFY, and YOU’RE THE WORST in the big categories. Slightly surprised BROOKLYN NINE-NINE didn’t get more acknowledgement.
- It didn’t, really, have a chance, but PERSON OF INTEREST’s “If-Then-Else” was one of the most ambitious episodes of TV this year.
- Anthony Mendez is fabulous as the JANE THE VIRGIN narrator, and I’m so glad he was acknowledged.
- UPDATE: On the good side: I am thrilled that MOM’s Allison Janney got acknowledged (even if the show/Anna Faris deserved love, too). And Will Forte getting love for THE LAST MAN ON EARTH was a delightful — and earned. That first episode of LMOE worked because Forte brought you in and made you care, instantly.
I will likely have more thoughts, but for now, what has you most steamed?
