About Last Night…GOTHAM, MINORITY REPORT, CASTLE, and More
September 29, 2015 by Marisa Roffman
Monday night’s television was all about one thing for me: THE X-FILES trailer. (Sorry, every scripted full-length show.)
And with us getting into week 2 of TV, that also means I’m already behind on some shows (sorry, CBS, I promise I’ll catch up on SCORPION and BIG BANG today). But some big things went down, so let’s talk about last night’s TV…GOTHAM: I thought last night’s episode was one of the strongest episodes of the series. Jerome’s particular brand of mayhem was devastating, and though Essen’s death wasn’t unexpected, it was still a brutal blow. I still don’t know if I buy Barbara’s swift change to badness, but at least it’s a lot of fun. And Ed may have finally gotten Kristin’s attention, but I fear that means doom for the poor woman.
THE VOICE: A fine episode. The proposal was the most memorable part. Aside from that, Lyndsey and Manny were the highlights for me. I do wish we’d see more of these one chair auditions versus showcasing people who weren’t going through. I get there’s talent there, too, but I’d rather get to know people who actually make it to the next round.
MINORITY REPORT: The world they’ve built is interesting. But the problem with trying to stop crimes from happening is there’s very little to actually be done, but 40-plus minutes to showcase it. It felt like the case dragged on longer than it should have because they had to fit into the network episode timeframe. I do hope the can find a better balance with the crime story and the subplots going forward.
CASTLE: I kind of wish the episode had been more Beckett-centric — similar to the way “XY” was for Castle’s POV. Not crazy excited about the new Big Bad (especially when there are so many gaps in last year’s big arc that have yet to be filled in), but maybe it’ll compel me more the next time they touch on it.
And, look, I understand why people are livid about the ending. I think — if it is told right — it could be an interesting story. But it’s too soon to tell whether the new twist in the dynamic will ultimately work. I don’t think there’s any doubt Castle and Beckett will get back together; the big question is what it will take, and what damage it will do to their relationship to get there.
