THE FLASH introduced Jay Garrick at the very end of last week’s season premiere, as Jay arrived at STAR Labs to deliver a warning to Barry.

It marked the first time Jay had appeared in a live-action story, something that delighted his portrayer, Teddy Sears.

“It’s thrilling…I didn’t anticipate how thrilling it was going to be when I said yes,” Sears told reporters after a recent screening of THE FLASH. “What I didn’t anticipate was how important it felt when I was doing it. It’s weird, and hokey, and maybe very actor-y, but there was something very important that began happening. And most specifically, putting on that helmet…there was a real awe and reverence for seeing this thing. That was absolutely not acted at all. There was such substance in that moment. I keep coming back to this moment of ‘Wow, this feels really important.’ I can’t sum it up any better than that.”

Jay’s Flash costume is very distinctive — and could have posed a problem translating to a real-life outfit.

“I wasn’t sure what they were going to do,” Sears admitted. “[It’s] very red and very yellow going up. I wasn’t sure how they were going to handle it so they have successfully modernized it with this really cool motorcycle jacket aesthetic. The jacket is wonderful, listen, it’s all good the pants, the boots…it’s really the helmet, ya know? The helmet sort of caps the whole thing off. I love what they did to the helmet, too. If you look at the helmet and we’ll certainly have enough opportunities to, it’s been around. It’s beaten up, it’s got the dings…It’s seen its share of battles so the detail that the team went into those little things to have it arrive with a story and a history and a past, that’s really what made it work for me. As far as me making it work, they just took my measurements, man, and it just fit.”

As for the two men who have been/are Flash, there won’t be a rivalry between the duo.

“I just think it’s going to be a coach/athlete relationship,” Sears said. “Jay is the older brother sort of that he didn’t have. He’s…more experienced. His attitude is a little bit more confident. He’s the teacher to him.”

THE FLASH airs Tuesdays at 8 PM on The CW.
