SUPERSTORE: Lauren Ash and Justin Spitzer Tease the Season 3 Finale
May 3, 2018 by Marisa Roffman
Attention, Cloud 9 shoppers (um, viewers): Thursday’s SUPERSTORE finale is nearly here, and major things are going down.
“A big town hall is happening,” SUPERSTORE creator Justin Spitzer previews of the episode titled, appropriately, “Town Hall.” “We finally meet the CEO [played by Brian Howe] who is coming to the store.”
While initially there is excitement (at least from Glenn and Dina) about their store hosting the important meeting, things quickly take a turn. “The group realizes that they can’t talk about everything—certain topics are off-limits, including Myrtle,” Spitzer teases. “They start to learn that Myrtle was fired [for questionable reasons]. So it’s our group using the opportunity to see if they can get her job back.”
Which means that for the final episode of the season (the show has already been renewed for season 4), the St. Louis Cloud 9 employees have a common goal, and are working in sync. “I really think people are going to appreciate and respond to the kind of story: everyone is being brought together and what that looks like,” Lauren Ash (Dina) says. “When we have stories where everyone is on-board and excited, people really respond to those. [And] if Dina’s involved in this, it must be a big thing. And crazy things happen! It’s a huge episode.”
Though everyone is on the same page, work-wise, the show will not totally ignore the fallout of Jonah (Ben Feldman) and Kelly (Kelly Stables) abrupt breakup—especially given his increasingly complicated relationship with Amy (America Ferrera). “In the breaking of the episode, we talked a lot about it becoming about Kelly’s attitude toward Jonah, and playing off what happens when you break up at work,” Spitzer allows. “But as we broke it, we started talking about other parts of the story. We see a little bit of the fallout of what happened with Kelly and Jonah, but we made sure Kelly got a win.”
And for a show that has excelled at finale twists, Ash teases season 3 could be the biggest one yet. “What I think is amazing is I don’t think anybody is going to see the very end of this episode coming,” she says with a laugh. “What I love about SUPERSTORE is that we ended [season 1] on the [store] walk-out, which was so huge. We ended the second [year] on the tornado, which was unbelievable. And how do you top that? How do you top those amazing, huge moments? Dare I say, I think we have. I think we have topped it.”
