Amazon has tapped writers JD Payne and Patrick McKay to develop the upcoming THE LORD OF THE RINGS television series.
“The rich world that J.R.R. Tolkien created is filled with majesty and heart, wisdom and complexity,” Payne and McKay said in a statement. “We are absolutely thrilled to be partnering with Amazon to bring it to life anew. We feel like Frodo, setting out from the Shire, with a great responsibility in our care — it is the beginning of the adventure of a lifetime.”
Though the series has yet to be written (or cast), Amazon’s THE LORD OF THE RINGS has received a multi-season order. Per Amazon, the show “will explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring.”
Payne and McKay most recently penned STAR TREK 4 for J.J. Abrams.

Amazon has handed out a series order to THE EXPATRIATES. The series hails from Nicole Kidman’s production company Blossom Films.
“After announcing our recent first look deal with Nicole and Blossom Films, we are thrilled to kick off this relationship by bringing this very popular novel from author Janice Y.K. Lee to Prime Video,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios, in a statement. “The story weaves an addictive tapestry that follows a group of complex women and their lives as outsiders in Hong Kong. Comments Off on CASTLE ROCK: Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason on the Draw of Small Town Stories, Stephen King’s Blessing
Long before writers Sam Shaw and Dustin Thomason co-created Hulu’s new drama CASTLE ROCK, they fell in love with Stephen King-like stories. (Their new series is set in the King multiverse, as they revisit what is going on now in the fictional town of Castle Rock.)
“I’ve always loved—I think we both have—stories of strange happenings in small towns,” Shaw shared with reporters in the video below. (Shaw is also a huge TWIN PEAKS fan who went viral after he wore a one-of-a-kind jacket to that show’s revival premiere.) “And just stories about secrets that lurk behind picket fences. In this case, the picket fence has been gone for a long time in Castle Rock…to a certain extent, I think we’ve always been obsessed with stories about the dysfunction of small towns.” Read more

YOU’s Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) is being called the “ultimate romantic,” but his portrayer isn’t as sympathetic to Joe’s obsessive ways as some viewers may be.
“Somehow, I seem to be more troubled by it,” Badgley said during the show’s Television Critics Association panel. “I don’t want to speak for anyone else, but I know that throughout I felt as though maybe I was the most troubled, which is why [executive producers] Greg [Berlanti] and Sera [Gamble] insisted that I was the right guy for the role.”

YOU has been renewed for a second season—more than a month before its September 9th series debut. (It’s a big week for the series, which also landed a PaleyFest Fall TV Preview panel.)
The new Lifetime drama follows Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley), the “ultimate romantic, a man willing to cross any line in pursuit of true love.” Spoiler alert: he isn’t exactly Prince Charming, as the photo on the left can attest to.
The first season of YOU is based on the Caroline Kepnes novel by the same name; the upcoming second season, which will be set/filmed in Los Angeles, is based on the follow-up book, “Hidden Bodies.”
YOU season 1 stars Badgley, Elizabeth Lail, Shay Mitchell, Zach Cherry, and Luca Padovan, with John Stamos in a recurring role. The book series was adapted for television by Sera Gamble and Greg Berlanti.

The host of the LATE LATE SHOW joined the Backstreet Boys for a performance of their Vegas residency, and volunteered to replace one of the men for a night. The singers didn’t seem too into the idea—but Corden voted for Brian Littrell to take a break.
In the video below, Corden joined AJ McLean, Howie D., Nick Carter, and Kevin Richardson…and was actually able to follow along pretty well.
