SPEECHLESS: John Ross Bowie Teases a Trip to London
October 5, 2018 by Marisa Roffman
The DiMeos are going to London!
With the family losing their house—and with a brief stay with Kenneth (Cedric Yarbrough) quickly falling apart in the first episode—they take a trip to London, where Maya’s (Minnie Driver) father lives.
“The first shot of the season [that we filmed] was in front of Buckingham Palace,” John Ross Bowie (Jimmy). “We had crazy location permits. People were stopping, because I guess they don’t often shoot in Central London, and they were like, ‘Why are these Americans cluttering up my roundabout?’ We shot things you couldn’t fake anywhere else. We were on the top of this double-decker tour bus going around on a loop. There’s not a question that we shot this on Fox lot. It’s going to look amazing.”
But things aren’t entirely smooth with the family reunion. “It’s a beautiful scene,” Bowie teases. “I won’t give too much away, but there is a reunion. I wouldn’t say there’s a reconciliation, but an understanding that comes in that reunion. But mostly it’s an excuse for Cleese to make fun of his short son-in-law.”
“If you’re into the really nasty, caustic John Cleese from FAWLTY TOWERS, you’re in for a treat,” he continues. “If you’re in for the slightly sweeter, cuddly John Cleese from A FISH CALLED WANDA, he shows up eventually, as well. We see a couple of sides of Cleese. It was so cool. Working with John Cleese wasn’t even on my bucket list, because I didn’t even think it could happen. PYTHON was such a part of my growing up. I learned about history from MONTY PYTHON, I learned about comedy timing from MONTY PYTHON. They were a huge part of my growing up. I got down-right emotional working with the guy.”
After London, the DiMeos will have a little bit of an easier time than they did last year. “It’s going to be a little lighter,” Bowie teases. “It’s not like last year was a trauma or anything, but we found out JJ was going to have to take another year of high school, we lost the house, there was a rather intense moment with Minnie’s mom where they didn’t reconcile. This will be a little bit of a lighter season where the kids get a little more independence, which means the parents get a little more independence.”
SPEECHLESS, Season Premiere, 8:30/7:30c, ABC
