SUPERSTORE: Justin Spitzer on Amy’s Return to Work in ‘Maternity Leave’
November 8, 2018 by Marisa Roffman
SUPERSTORE’s Amy (America Ferrera) just had a baby, but it’s not all newborn bliss on tonight’s episode, “Maternity Leave.”
“Amy is forced to return to work like two days after giving birth,” executive producer Justin Spitzer teases.
Maternity leave—or the lack thereof—was among the issues the employees tabled at the end of the season 3. And while the Cloud 9 family rallied around Cheyenne (Nichole Bloom) in season 2 after she had her child, they won’t be able to do the same for Amy.
“Glenn was able to [get Cheyenne time off] by suspending her,” Spitzer points out. “The big difference is Amy was just suspended. She’s on even thinner ice. Whether or not the company would pay for maternity leave—they certainly didn’t when Cheyenne was pregnant—with the Family Medical Leave Act, a company has to hold your job while you’re out, even if they don’t pay you. Amy, because she was suspended for a while, she would have lost her job if she spent more time out of work.”
But this won’t be something that simply goes away. “That’s a big issue,” Spitzer allows. “It’s adding to a mass of indignities that is going to start to erupt later in the season.”
