CHICAGO FIRE underwent a number of changes in 2018, a fact that showrunner Derek Haas is all too aware of.

“We got the new time slot on Wednesday nights at 9,” he says. “And then having MED as a lead-in and PD as a lead-out has been just way beyond what anybody’s expectations were. The way our viewers embraced all three being on one night and being ONE CHICAGO. This first half of the season, I’m particularly proud of.”

The show faced a number of real and reel losses in season 7, but in addition to the emotional stories, it also tackled a number of large-scale action sequences.

“In terms of storylines, doing that giant resident fire [for the crossover], which was our first episode of shooting [was big],” Haas admits. “But really this winter finale, where we got to figuratively throw the kitchen sink at [the episode]. We had these giant, giant scenes we wouldn’t have been able to pull off years ago. But because we have Reza Tabrizi directing and this crew, they’ll just give us everything.”

“It’s amazing,” he continues. “I’m humbled and excited. I know sometimes they read these scripts and they’re like, ‘What the hell are they thinking over there in Los Angeles?’ But they pull it off each time.”
