Top 15 Shows and Episodes of 2018

December 27, 2018 by

In case you haven’t heard, there’s a lot of TV. A lot. Close to 500 scripted shows, in fact. That’s made these “end of year” lists absolutely brutal.

So here are a few caveats:

1) This is a hybrid list of the best episodes and shows I watched this year. My rules were I could only have one overlap with show and episode (which also happens to be my personal pick for best show/episode of the year) and I couldn’t pick a show if I hadn’t finished every episode that aired in 2018. (That also means shows I really have been enjoying like KIDDING and ESCAPE FROM DANNEMORA aren’t on the list. There just are not enough hours in the day.)

2) Given the sheer amount of TV, it’s quite possible/probable your favorite isn’t represented here. I’m sorry! But feel free to let me know what particularly excited you this year in the comments.

That being said, here is the list (in alphabetical order)…

Stephen King adaptations are, to put it kindly, very hit or miss. So often the storytellers go for the terror versus digging into what really makes the original story tick. And with Hulu’s ambitious anthology, they had an even trickier task at hand: telling an original story, set in/with the history of one of King’s most infamous locations.

As a big King fan, my hopes for the show were high. The talent behind the scenes was great, the actors were top-notch, and it was my personal favorite setting for King stories. It was a big, big swing…and ended up being my favorite television adaptation of King’s work.

It helps the show felt like you were dropped into a King story. The look was moody, the score was great, and the acting was as compelling as you’d hope for with the talent attached. The story started off as one kind of story (the suicide of a warden at Shawshank led to the discovery of a mysterious man being held at the prison) and quickly shifted to another (spoiler alert: multiverse?!). CASTLE ROCK kept you guessing, but also engaged until the very end—oh, and there was that SHINING tease as a post-credit scene.

It also helps CASTLE ROCK had the best episode of the year… (Photo credit: Dana Starbard/Hulu)
