YOU’RE THE WORST Team on the Final Season Premiere: ‘The Weirdest Episode We’ve Shot, By Far’

When YOU’RE THE WORST fans tune in to the final season premiere on Wednesday, January 9, they may initially be a little bit confused by what’s going on.

“Our first episode is incredibly ambitious and incredibly weird,” series creator Stephen Falk says with a laugh. “Probably the weirdest episode we’ve shot, by far. It involves so many different elements and time periods.”

The installment—without spoilers, we’ll just say it’s a love story—allowed for the storytellers to craft a very different kind of episode, which includes only a couple of series regulars…and a gaggle of new faces.

“Episode 1 is bizarre,” star Chris Geere (Jimmy) teases. “Episode 1 is like Sunday Funday on mushrooms. It’s weird! Aya [Cash (Gretchen)] and I are constantly looking at each other going, ‘What are we doing?’ But it’s super fun, super energetic, very YOU’RE THE WORST. Very out there. It [was] really exciting to shoot.”

Cash admits her initial reaction to the opening chapter of the final season was “What?!” and called it a bit like a “bizarro-land” episode. “There’s some mushroom aspects to it,” she says, echoing Geere. “Like, late-80s, early-90s rom-com tropes. It’s like a movie within the show. It’s so bizarre!”
