BROOKLYN NINE-NINE, A MILLION LITTLE THINGS, THE GOOD PLACE

A MILLION LITTLE THINGS – “the day before…” – On an all-new episode of “A Million Little Things,” we go back to the day before Jon’s death, before everything seemed to have fallen apart. Jon is struggling both in his personal and work life, Delilah and Eddie make plans to tell Jon about their secret affair, and Maggie attempts to start her new life in Boston, airing THURSDAY, JAN. 24 (9:01-10:00 p.m. EST), on The ABC Television Network. (ABC/Jack Rowand)
JAMES RODAY, RON LIVINGSTON

Let’s talk about Thursday night’s TV!SUPERNATURAL: Oh, Dean. No. No. No. This seems like a really stupid plan. All of it. This entire thing. Yikes.

BROOKLYN NINE-NINE: I love that Gina was Jake’s origin story. With Chelsea Peretti’s exit looming, it was lovely to get more time with that friendship—and Amy going deep into student mode was perfect. What a fun episode.

A MILLION LITTLE THINGS: Suicide is a very, very, very tough topic to handle on TV, and as much as I’ve enjoyed the show, I didn’t love this episode. By centering explicitly on one day, it was framed as giving us reasons for why Jon killed himself. But the fact is it’s rarely one thing, it’s rarely one day…and the episode didn’t really reveal much as it was. (Though I’m glad Jon and Ashley didn’t have an affair, because it would have felt so cliche.)

It’s unfortunate so many of the non-Jon scenes just felt pointless. Rome had been planning to kill himself the next day, too, and while we didn’t need to see him catatonic or anything else that might feel stereotypical, it would have been nice to dive into that a little bit more.

THE GOOD PLACE: I’ve been very hit and miss about this season…and I didn’t love the finale. Part of it is that the show has done such incredible season closers—both in terms of the scale and just being genuinely funny—that this felt like a let-down.

Okay, the bad people have personal ties to the crew. That makes sense! (Who wants to see serial killers be redeemed?) Chidi is going to reset himself? Well, OK. He’s been reset so many freaking times that it feels there is no suspense. Why should anyone doubt he and Eleanor will find themselves reunited? It’s always happened. Why would this time be any different? And, yes, this show can be cynical about humanity at times, but there is no way they’re going to do such a deep 180 that they end the series, whenever that comes, without them coming together at some point again.

It’s also disappointing, because the ensemble is so great and we got so little of that. Yes, Michael’s video for Eleanor and Chidi was sweet. But Jason had, what, a joke about pizza? Tahani was key to realizing the twist of people from their past being brought in, but barely anything else. The best scene of the episode was probably Eleanor and Janet’s conversation about human connection. Oh well.
