SUPERSTORE: Ben Feldman on Jonah and Amy’s Evolving Relationship
February 22, 2019 by Marisa Roffman
For the first three seasons of SUPERSTORE, Jonah (Ben Feldman) and Amy (America Ferrera) evolved from colleagues to genuine friends. (Well, friends who occasionally flirted and kissed.)
So when the duo hooked up very publicly in the season 3 finale—and subsequently started secretly dating (they’re now open about the relationship)—there was the very real question of how it would impact their interactions, especially at work.
“They haven’t changed that much, and that was actually really important to America and I,” Feldman says. “We don’t suddenly have a completely different dynamic. That’s not what happens in real life. It’s funny, my relationship with my wife is similar to both Jonah and Amy’s, and America and mine’s: there’s a lot of eye rolls, but we love each other. It’s been a very easy transition.”
One avenue the show has been a little slower to explore? Jonah’s relationship with Amy’s infant son. “There’s not been a lot of Jonah and baby [interaction] so far,” Feldman allows. “Jonah’s not inserting himself into the baby’s life in a very real way.”
For Feldman, the biggest shift has been that the couple is “just a little more on each other’s team.” He points to the duo dealing with Jonah’s parents visiting the store—unaware that Jonah worked there—as a prime example of the two being up to their old antics, with a new layer. “It was another opportunity for Amy to be on Jonah’s side, he says. “Jonah needed her to participate in a very nuanced and complex lie…it was another opportunity to display Jonah and Amy being on the same side. But otherwise it’s the same thing [as the earlier seasons].”
