ABC Renews BLACK-ISH, Orders Spinoff MIXED-ISH
May 2, 2019 by Marisa Roffman
ABC is expanding the BLACK-ISH universe: The network has renewed the comedy for season 6 and ordered a prequel, MIXED-ISH, which centers around a young Bow (played in the mothership by Tracee Ellis Ross; Arica Himmel portrays her in the new series). BLACK-ISH previously led to spinoff GROWN-ISH, which airs on Freeform.
BLACK-ISH stars Anthony Anderson, Ross as Rainbow Johnson, Laurence Fishburne, Yara Shahidi, Marcus Scribner, Miles Brown, Marsai Martin, Jenifer Lewis, Peter Mackenzie, and Deon Cole.
In MIXED-ISH, per ABC, “Rainbow Johnson recounts her experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the ‘80s and the constant dilemmas they had to face over whether to assimilate or stay true to themselves. Bow’s parents Paul and Alicia decide to move from a hippie commune to the suburbs to better provide for their family. As her parents struggle with the challenges of their new life, Bow and her siblings navigate a mainstream school in which they’re perceived as neither black nor white. This family’s experiences illuminate the challenges of finding one’s own identity when the rest of the world can’t decide where you belong.”
The series stars Himmel, Tika Sumpter, Christina Anthony, Mykal-Michelle Harris, and Ethan Childress.
Originally, MIXED-ISH was supposed to air as a backdoor pilot on ABC on May 7; the episode will be held until next season.
