About Last Night…AMERICA’S GOT TALENT and SONGLAND
May 29, 2019 by Marisa Roffman
Let’s talk about Tuesday night’s TV!AMERICA’S GOT TALENT: That was a really solid premiere. Eric Chien was incredible…seriously, how the heck does he do that? And wow to Kodi Lee. Yes, his story is incredibly moving (I cried), but he’s also incredibly talented. And on a lighter note, V. Unbeatable was really fun.
Even though Terry Crews is new to the mothership, he’s not new to the franchise. Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough are new, and it felt like a fairly natural transition.
SONGLAND: I’m intrigued, but a little disappointed by the series premiere. I find the songwriting process fascinating, and I thought we’d be diving more into the process itself. On one hand, the beginnings of a song likely wouldn’t make compelling TV, but by the time it came to the panel, it was well beyond just being a rough draft. On the other, we miss so much of the grind and agonizing about getting it to the place it needs to be. And by the nature of the competition—starting with four songwriters and eliminating one mid-episode—we have so little time with the people we were supposed to be rooting for.
That being said, I enjoyed the episode enough to keep it as part of my rotation. The good/bad news is this show’s quality really could vary greatly episodically based both on the guest artist and the songwriters themselves.
