About Last Night…THE VOICE, PRODIGAL SON, ALL RISE, and More
September 24, 2019 by Marisa Roffman
The TV season is back, which means About Last Night is, too.
Let’s look at Monday night’s season premieres…
THE VOICE: This season is probably one of the biggest tests the show has undergone, with Adam Levine’s exit. The show relied on the Blake Shelton/Adam chemistry for years—in addition to the talent of the contestants, of course—and I was a little underwhelmed with the new coaching dynamic so far. I’m hoping they’ll settle more in the coming episodes.
BOB HEARTS ABISHOLA: As someone who loves MOM, I was really hoping for more from this show. I’m glad CBS is being a bit more inclusive, but I wish it was under different circumstances. Why couldn’t the two just fall for each other vs. have her be his nurse, whom he then tracked down at her home?
PRODIGAL SON: I. Love. This. Show. I’m fascinated by twisted families on television, I’m fascinated by complex serial killers (again, just on TV), and this is messed up. It’s also unexpectedly funny…the hand joke made me literally laugh out loud. Yes, it’s an obvious gag, but it was in no way obvious this show would make it.
ALL RISE: This sounds like a dig, but it really isn’t: This absolutely feels like an ABC/TGIT show. (And I say that as someone who loves GREY’S ANATOMY.) I was really into the dynamic between the characters, and I love the idea of Lola and Mark being just friends. I’m curious to learn more about them.
BLUFF CITY LAW: Jimmy Smits is so enjoyable to watch on television. Caitlin McGee, who is still relatively new, was able to hold her own against him, too; I’m very intrigued to see how that relationship develops over the season.
