The CHICAGO franchise has spawned a number of spinoffs post-FIRE’s launch—P.D. and MED are currently on the air; JUSTICE ran for a single season in 2017—but the series hasn’t expanded in a number of years.

However, with Severide (Taylor Kinney) temporarily shifting over to the Office of Fire Investigations, the series is following him as he tackles his new job. (On the Wednesday, November 13 episode, Severide and OFI realized a bad investigation nearly financially torpedoed a local grocery store.) So is a fifth CHICAGO series in the works?

“It’s funny, because I said it to [executive producer] Dick [Wolf] as a joke earlier in the season when we planned this storyline,” CHICAGO FIRE showrunner Derek Haas recalls. “‘Well, we’ll hire an actress that can go toe to toe with him and then we’ll spin it off,’ as a joke. And he was like, ‘Not likely.'”

The reason Wolf, whose franchise history includes NBC’s LAW & ORDER and CBS’ FBI, didn’t want to pursue things? “He loves Severide on CHICAGO FIRE,” Haas explains.

So while FIRE will play with OFI, it’ll stay on the mothership. “I love it as a show within a show, because I think it’s interesting what the Office of Fire Investigations does,” Haas says. “And, of course, anything Severide does, to me, is fun and interesting.”
