CHICAGO MED Bosses Break Down the Fall Finale Couple Twists
November 20, 2019 by Marisa Roffman
[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the CHICAGO MED fall finale, “I Can’t Imagine the Future.”]
CHICAGO MED shook up many of its central couples in its midseason finale, as April (Yaya DaCosta) and Ethan (Brian Tee) fell apart with the reveal that it won’t be simple to have kids, Natalie’s (Torrey DeVitto) attempt to reunite with Will (Nick Gehlfuss) fell flat, and Charles (Oliver Platt) lost his wife.
So what comes next? Showrunners Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider offered up a few teases…
The star-crossed duo really are done—at least for now.
“He makes it very clear that there isn’t any hope,” Frolov says. “They hurt each other too much and that’s all they’ve ever done.”
Adds Schneider: “She’s really hurt and surprised he’d take that [route].”
But they can’t actually escape from each other’s lives, as they have to keep working together. “They will work to resolve that,” Frolov says. “That that will be part of the storyline of [episode] 10: how they work together.”
In the aftermath of Natalie’s rejection, Will often acted out, occasionally showing his ex a bit too much interest. For Natalie, the loss will be more internal. “Initially she feels a great, great loss,” Frolov says. “And a missed opportunity. Then she concentrates on her job. She refocuses—she’s never not focused—but she channels all of her energy into the job.”
April and Ethan (and, um, Crockett):
The medical drama will pick up in 2020 six weeks after the fall finale—as Ethan is returning back to Chicago.
“What April’s dealing with are her unresolved feelings for Crockett,” Schneider previews.
Though April loves her boyfriend, the reveal that she may not be able to have a child has thrown her. “What Crockett represents is this question of womanhood and identity for her when she finds out she’s pre-menopausal,” Frolov says. “Crockett represents an attractive wild side. She’s personally attracted to him and attracted to him as a symbol.”
Making things more complicated? Ethan and Crockett will start to become friends in the second half of the season…
“When we come back, it is about him dealing with his loss,” Schneider says.
And Charles won’t be alone in his grief. “He has a couple of other daughters,” Frolov says. “We are going to meet his youngest daughter.”
Though viewers met his youngest as a little girl in season 2, now, “we’re gonna meet her as a typical adolescent,” Schneider teases. But she’s not entirely thrilled with her father: “He hasn’t been around so much because of what he’s been dealing with.”
