10 Favorite Pilots of the 2010s
December 23, 2019 by Marisa Roffman
Pilots…are tough. Shows have to introduce a world, characters, and, in theory, set up where the show will go in the first season. But when they’re done correctly? Boy, they can be magic.
As the decade comes to a close, we look back at some of our favorite pilots over the past ten years…*
Jane the Virgin (October 13, 2014)
JANE THE VIRGIN should have never worked. The premise, alone, sounds a bit ridiculous: a young religious virgin gets accidentally artificially inseminated with her boss/former crush’s sperm. But rather than be cheesy, the pilot was funny (thanks in part to an excellent narrator) and absolutely genuinely heartwarming. Though the show would later go on to have (many, many, many) love triangles, the pilot firmly set up the show’s real love story: the Villanueva family.

*We’re also doing a list of favorite episodes over the decade. As a note, one of the (self-imposed) restrictions was nothing that no show that made this list could make the other so there wouldn’t be a huge amount of double-ups. (It also served as a tie-breaker for some shows, whose pilots could have made this list, but ended up with a different episode in that one instead.)
Which pilots were your favorite this decade?
