CHICAGO FIRE Boss Teases Firehouse 51’s ‘Combustible’ Overlap with a New Group
January 6, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
The CHICAGO FIRE firefighters find themselves in an unusual battle when the series returns on Wednesday, January 8: overlapping coverage areas with another firehouse. Tensions immediately arise—at least on one side—when the two house show up to the same incident.
“Firehouses have their own personalities,” CHICAGO FIRE executive producer Derek Haas teases. “We thought it would be interesting to do a firehouse where their number one concern is getting their pictures in the paper and getting lauded for being heroes. Because our firehouse is such the opposite of that—we do things behind the scenes and don’t want any credit for anything and always give credit elsewhere. So those two different personalities coming into proximity with each other, and overlapping with each other, we thought was combustible and interesting and would be fun to explore for a couple of episodes.”
Naturally, one of the new figures has a tie to our firehouse—in this case, it’s a paramedic, Violet (Hanako Greensmith), whom Gallo (Alberto Rosende) has a past with. (The previous tease was Violet is “a fun, cool and confident paramedic-in-charge,” whose “skill can be intimidating but mostly she’s impressive. She’d never back down from a challenge.”)
“Gallo is a very good young raw talent in the fire department,” Haas says. “He butted heads with somebody else at the academy and she ends up being as competitive as he is—even more so. We throw [them] together to see where it goes. But we wanted to do that sort of switcheroo on the audience where he’s talking about this mean person that he went to the academy with who was just the worst…and then you find out, oh wait, she’s this very competent and attractive young paramedic.”
In other words, sparks are going to fly…
