CHICAGO MED Bosses Preview Manstead Drama Amidst a ‘Difficult’ Case
January 6, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
When CHICAGO MED returns for its first new episode of 2020, Natalie (Torrey DeVitto) and Will (Nick Gehlfuss) are trying to move past their latest relationship hiccup.
“The episode starts with Natalie making a peace overture to Will, because of the difficulty of their breakup,” CHICAGO MED executive producer Andrew Schneider teases. “It looks like they may be heading to at a least friendship. But then they have a very difficult case where they disagree about the treatment of a drug addict profoundly.”
Unfortunately for Will, he has a history with the patient (played by JUSTIFIED’s Joelle Carter). “Will had actually treated her a few years ago [off-screen], and he prescribed opioids for her and she wound up becoming addicted,” Schneider previews. “And so although he wasn’t to blame, he can’t help blaming himself for her conditions. So he fights particularly hard to help her in this episode.”
“And to help her with her son,” adds executive producer Diane Frolov.
Though the situation is confined to one episode, “the story kicks off a journey for Will,” Frolov says. “It’s an important story for the ongoing episodes.”
As for Carter—who was a series regular on the short-lived ONE CHICAGO series CHICAGO JUSTICE as a different character—the producers didn’t hesitate to bring her back to the ONE CHICAGO universe in a different capacity. “The feeling was it had been enough time since she did JUSTICE it wouldn’t be distracting,” Schneider says. “And she’s such a great actor, you wouldn’t make any connection to those two parts because they’re so different.”
CHICAGO MED, Wednesdays, 8/7c, NBC
