CHICAGO P.D. Boss Teases Burzek’s Next Steps: The Pregnancy ‘Alters the Way They Look at Their Relationship’
January 10, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
In the midst of the Halstead’s (Jesse Lee Soffer) fight to survive and Atwater’s (LaRoyce Hawkins) family drama, Burgess (Marina Squerciati) made a big decision on the Wednesday, January 8 episode of CHICAGO P.D.: she’s going to move forward with her pregnancy.
With that comes a natural conversation about how she’ll proceed with her very physical, frequently dangerous job. “That comes into focus in episode 11,” CHICAGO P.D. boss Rick Eid previews. “That’s that’s what the whole episode is really about. Episode 11 and episode 13, we really lean into the Burgess pregnancy and what’s it like to be a female cop and be pregnant? And what kind of restrictions does it put on what you’re able to do physically? When you’re somebody who’s used to being in the street and on active duty, and then you’re no longer allowed to be an active duty, how do you rationalize that in your head?”
“Burgess is an ambitious person and wants to move up the ranks,” he continues. “So she’s struggling with the reality of being pregnant and what how that impacts her ability to do the job she loves to do.”
But that also means the rest of the team will need to be looped into the big news. “I think everybody’s excited; they’re surprised, they’re confused,” Eid says “They’re sort of the the mouthpiece for the audience: What does it mean for Ruzek and Kim? Kim’s handling it the way Kim’s handling it. Ruzek is trying to figure all that out, too. So it’s really, I hope, an interesting, honest look at an unexpected pregnancy between two people who have a lot of love and respect for each other but aren’t necessarily together.”
So what is going on with Burgess and Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger)? “It definitely alters the way they look at their relationship because…you’re now inextricable inextricably tied for the rest of time,” Eid acknowledges. “They’re trying to figure out what that means: is this going to be romantic? Are they going to live together? Are they going to co-parent? We really get into all that.”
