NBC Boss on Multi-Season Pickups
January 13, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
Nearly eight months after NBC renewed THIS IS US for three additional seasons, the network pulled the trigger on a three-year order for NEW AMSTERDAM. (Taking the latter to at least season 5.)
But with the multi-year renewals going to dramas so far, what about comedies? “I mean, I would say more of everything all the time,” NBC Chairman Paul Telegdy told reporters after the NBC executive panel at TCA. “But there are certain guardrails in place in my business: I don’t have an infinite checkbook and decisions are made for lots of different reasons. And yes, we absolutely [would] be prepared to make multi-year commitments to certain shows.”
When asked specifically about SUPERSTORE, which has been anchoring the network’s Thursday night comedy block over the past few years, “it’s doing great,” Telegdy said. “And conversations are being had about the future of every show; what’s right for one isn’t right for all…NEW AMSTERDAM [has a] solid writing team, great producing that is going to generate great stories and ensemble—as well as potential for a spin off; I can imagine the whole world around AMSTERDAM…there’s always mysterious reasons why companies make what look like big decisions, but this is a hit show.”
