David Selby Previews a Heartbreaking CHICAGO FIRE
February 5, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
On the Wednesday, February 5 episode of CHICAGO FIRE, Firehouse 51 saves the Larsons, a longtime couple whose move to Chicago has taken a tragic twist.
“[Tim Larson has] only been in Chicago a short time; [his wife] had spent a lot of time there in the summers when she was young,” David Selby, who plays Tim, previews. “So they decide to move, and then I don’t want to spoil it, but there’s a life-changing tragedy that happens: Their house catches on fire. We see, as a result, what happens and how this man manages to survive the fire and everything that happens with the help of the community.”
The CHICAGO FIRE reached out to Selby’s team, with the request he take the role, and the actor was immediately drawn to the story.
“The episode says something to me about where we are as a country,” he says. “And in this particular instance, it’s how the people of Chicago pull together. That’s the theme of [the episode]—how we support each other. And I just was taken by that.”
The actor, who will next appear on an episode of NCIS: NEW ORLEANS, was also thankful for the expansion of television in the past few years. “The one thing that I’m very pleased that has happened is that places like Chicago are now a big production town,” he says. “We owe that to all of the streaming [platforms]. It’s brought a lot of production to these places.”
Selby, whose storied career includes FALCON CREST, DARK SHADOWS, LEGION, and TELL ME YOU LOVE ME, was impressed by his time on CHICAGO FIRE—both with the cast/crew and the stunt team.
“We had to work [with] the fire,” he recalls. “The fire set is very well constructed with safety in mind; I had such confidence in them, because they knew absolutely what they were doing. [The experience] was special.”
“I have been in several series over my career,” he continues. “And the great thing about it is you create a family. And that was always important to me. At CHICAGO FIRE, you went in and immediately people were smiling, laughing, talking with each other. But they were also very dedicated to what they were all doing. That’s a wonderful feeling to be part of that kind of family.”
