CHICAGO P.D.’s Marina Squerciati and Patrick John Flueger Tease the Crossover with CHICAGO FIRE
February 19, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
The ONE CHICAGO universe is crossing over, again, with the Wednesday, February 26 block of CHICAGO FIRE and CHICAGO P.D., as the long-gone Roman (Brian Geraghty) returns in the middle of a case.
“He’s back in town and the storyline involves him and his sister,” CHICAGO P.D. boss Rick Eid previously teased. “He’s the connective tissue, so to speak, between the FIRE and the P.D. episodes.”
The FIRE team is brought into the mix when a group of teens overdose. For Roman, his return is personal, as his sister is among those impacted. And with his history on P.D., that cast will have a “pretty significant” role in the FIRE episode, Patrick John Flueger (Ruzek) teases.
Complicating matters? Roman’s return coincides with his ex/former colleague Burgess (Marina Squerciati) returning from her brief break post-miscarriage.
“She is in a moment of grieving,” Squerciati acknowledges. “Roman knows her so well that he immediately—and he used to be a cop—has a sixth sense that something is wrong.”
“Obviously, Burgess isn’t offering it up right away,” she continues. “She’s definitely trying to hide what happens. She doesn’t want to talk about it, which is how Burgess is dealing with it. But he picks up on it. And I think that’s really interesting—the dynamic of sort of long-lost friends or long-lost lovers. They know each other so well, that it’s impossible to sort of avoid each other’s scars.”
For Ruzek, he’s worried both about Burgess and how Roman returned. “There are a lot of interaction between the three of us—certainly the two of them,” Flueger says. “He’s been a little subversive about the way that he’s getting things done, for his own reasons. Which admirable on its own level, but [Roman]’s coming in a kind of a toxic way.”
After going through so much already, the case is going to “definitely put Burgess’ job on the line,” Squerciati teases. “She has nothing left to lose, and she’ll just be more reckless because she’s lost it all.”
