BROOKLYN NINE-NINE Boss on the Unlikely Inspiration for ‘The Jimmy Jab Games II’
February 20, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
BROOKLYN NINE-NINE is bringing back the “Jimmy Jab” games with the Thursday, February 20 episode “The Jimmy Jab Games II.”
The episode—a sequel to the season 2 episode, “The Jimmy Jab Games”—finds the squad getting highly competitive as they do such prestigious events as meat throwing and racing to the elevator in crazy get-ups.
Though the series has its fair share of running gags, doing a sequel to the “Jimmy Jab” episode was actually inspired by a very unlikely source: a fan-voted marathon ahead of the show’s move to NBC.
“I hadn’t watched it in several years, and I just love that episode,” BROOKLYN NINE-NINE boss Dan Goor explained to reporters in the video below. “And part of the reason is, I think, when we shot that original episode, the first cut was…10 or 11 minutes over. We had shot way too much because we were early in our careers, we didn’t know what we’re doing, and…it was just so doing so much more action than we’re normally used to. So we just overwrote it, I think.”
“Rebecca Asher was the director and she did such a masterful job that it was actually very easy to cut it down,” he continued. “But one of the things that happened, as a result of that, was that the joke density, because we cut so much stuff, was like the same joke density is what we had in season 5, 6, and 7. It’s just joke, joke, joke joke. And it’s really fun episode.”
Check out the video for more from Goor, including why this episode was a “fun challenge”…
