SUPERSTORE: America Ferrera to Exit the Comedy
February 28, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
SUPERSTORE will look very different in season 6: America Ferrera, who has led the series from the start, will not be returning.
“The last five years on SUPERSTORE have been some of the most rewarding, enriching and enjoyable years of my career,” Ferrera said in a statement. “Producing, directing and acting with this wonderful cast and crew has given me opportunities to grow as a person and storyteller. I’m so grateful to my partners at NBC and Universal Television for the support and belief they have always placed in the show, and I’m most thankful to the brilliant Justin Spitzer for creating the funny, smart and relevant world of SUPERSTORE and inviting me to be a part of it. As I start the next chapter for my family and career, I wish only the best, and much continued success, to my beloved SUPERSTORE family.”
“America’s immeasurable contributions to SUPERSTORE, both in front of and behind the camera as well as an ambassador for the show, can’t possibly be quantified,” Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta, Co-Presidents, Scripted Programming, NBC Entertainment said in a statement. “We feel so fortunate to call her both a colleague and friend.”
“America is a force of nature who not only pours her heart and soul into acting and producing on SUPERSTORE, but into the many causes and initiatives she supports,” Pearlena Igbokwe, President, Universal Television, added. “Over the last five seasons she has earned our gratitude and respect.”
Ferrera—who directed multiple episodes of the series and served as an executive producer—will continue with the comedy through the end of the current fifth season. The season 6 premiere is set to be the show’s 100th episode.
How Ferrera’s character, Amy, will be written out is not immediately clear. Currently in the series, Amy is the manager of the Cloud 9 store where the series is set, though the company recently underwent a corporate takeover. In the Thursday, February 27 episode the comedy, an in-company reporter came to the store to profile Amy—and took a photo that could be used against her in the future. (Amy has also expressed ambition about possibly moving up, so hopefully they take it in a nicer direction.) Additionally, Amy has been in a relationship with her colleague, Jonah (Ben Feldman) since the start of season 4; there’s no word on what this would mean for the future of that coupling.
Here’s Ferrera’s Instagram post about her exit…
Ferrea’s final episode will air Thursday, April 16.
