Let’s talk about Sunday night’s TV!

iHeart Living Room: One of the only bright spots of this pandemic has been the musical outreach by so many artists. The concert special felt like a warm blanket in the midst of a tough time. Kudos to all.

AMERICAN IDOL: As odd as it sounds, I feel like I appreciate the top 20 reveal episode(s) more than the other post-audition rounds, because before people move on or get eliminated, we get little mini-recaps of their journey so far. With so many contestants in the earlier stages, it’s so easy to forgot which people you connected to early on.

As for who made it through, well, it felt like based on what we saw, even if I liked a few people early on, the judges made the right decision.

WESTWORLD: Okay, first of all, the episode was gorgeously directed. There were a number of shots that made me want to pause the episode to just take in the way the scenes were framed.

I’m really enjoying the Caleb and Dolores dynamic, and the different ways they’ve become trapped by their reality. I don’t know I believe he’ll be able to make it out alive, but given most humans have now transitioned to hosts (or at least their bodies are hosts), maybe that isn’t the worst outcome for him.

The Charlotte backstory was sad, but, man, as much as I love Tessa Thompson, I do kind of wish we had gotten to keep her as a human vs. a host for…whomever she currently is.

ZOEY’S EXTRAORDINARY PLAYLIST: I. Loved. This. Episode.

First of all, holy hell, Jane Levy. I know she can’t sing every episode, but I’d really like her to? She was able to tackle everything from the weirdest possible song (I laughed so hard I cried over “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus”), to a duo of love songs, plus the absolutely gutting “How Do I Live.”

It really, really felt like the resolution to the love triangle was apparent by the songs Zoey sang, which Max pointed out. It’s not saying she has to get together with him that moment, and that’s not discounting her trauma-based bond with Simon, but…

But, man, what an absolute nightmarish day. I can’t fathom having my biggest secrets revealed via song. [For what series creator Austin Winsberg and series star Jane Levy had to say, here’s a post-mortem.]
