It’s Official: NBC Orders SVU Spinoff Starring Christopher Meloni
June 16, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
Months after news leaked out that Christopher Meloni would be leading up a new LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT spinoff following the NYPD’s Organized Crime Unit, NBC has officially confirmed the show’s order.
Meloni will be reprising his SVU character Elliot Stabler in the new series, now officially called LAW & ORDER: ORGANIZED CRIME. But, in theory, before that show launches, he’ll be showing up on LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT, to bring the character back into the world.
“It’s pretty clear that Elliot will be in SVU season opener,” SVU boss Warren Leight said in the show’s official podcast. “I think that much I know. Whether we get to see his family, as well, remains to be seen. There’s a lot of moving parts. They’re launching a new series, as well. It’s not just about the SVU season opener, it’s how do we help launch the new series, and how much crossover will there be between Elliot and Olivia as it goes on.”
In the new series, Stabler “returns to the NYPD to battle organized crime after a devastating personal loss. However, the city and police department have changed dramatically in the decade he’s been away, and he must adapt to a criminal justice system in the midst of its own moment of reckoning. Throughout the series, we will follow Stabler’s journey to find absolution and rebuild his life, while leading a new elite task force that is taking apart the city’s most powerful criminal syndicates one by one. ”
