Lin-Manuel Miranda on HAMILTON’s Disney+ Edits
June 23, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
When HAMILTON drops on Disney+ in July, the Broadway show will be almost entirely intact—minus a few curses.
Though some movies have been edited on the platform—like SPLASH’s nudity being digitally edited out—Lin-Manuel Miranda (who wrote the music, lyrics, and book as well as starred in the show) confirmed on Twitter that the content itself would be what appeared on stage.
“On July 3, you’re getting the whole show, every note & scene, & a 1-minute countdown clock during intermission (bathroom!),” he wrote. “But MPAA has a hard rule about language: more than 1 utterance of ‘F—‘ is an automatic R rating. We have 3 ‘F—s’ in our show. So I literally gave two f—s so the kids could see it.”
“In Yorktown, there’s a mute over ‘I get the f___ back up again,'” Miranda said of Okieriete Onaodowan’s Mulligan lyric. And in “Washington on Your Side,” Jefferson (Daveed Diggs) and Madison’s (Onaodowan) “Southern motherf—in’ Democratic-Republicans,” he revealed, it’ll turn into “Southern *record scratch*kin’ Democratic Republicans.”
The HAMILTON film—which also stars Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler, Leslie Odom, Jr. as Aaron Burr; Christopher Jackson as George Washington; Jonathan Groff as King George; Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton; Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds; and Anthony Ramos as John Laurens/Philip Hamilton—was originally supposed to debut in theaters in 2021. However, the COVID outbreak prompted Disney to bring the story of Alexander Hamilton’s life to the streaming platform more than a year early.
And streaming gives fans an additional benefit of what they choose to do with the censored lyrics. “You can sing whatEVER you like at home (even sync up the album)!” Miranda pointed out. “Love you. Enjoy.”
