SUPERSTORE Bosses Reveal Cut Season 1 Finale Storyline, HAMILTON Near-Miss, and More
July 23, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
Over 98 episodes, SUPERSTORE has tackled major holidays, weddings, a tornado, a strike, and so much more, but like any good television show, a number of storylines never made it to air.
During the show’s Comic-Con panel—moderated by series co-star Lauren Ash—co-showrunner Gabe Miller shared that Jonah (Ben Feldman) nearly had a very, very, very different arc. “Early on we had talked about why someone like Jonah would stay at the store,” he said. “Was it just for Amy or was it something else? At one point, there was an idea for the season 1 finale, we would be starting [the finale at] Cloud 9 corporate [and not know] why we’re there, what are we doing, and then we see Jonah walk in and reveal that he was a corporate spy infiltrating a Cloud 9 store to report on union activity.”
“Obviously that would have been a very different show,” he acknowledged. (Instead, Jonah was key to the Cloud 9 union attempts, and the season 1 finale staged a walk-out when Glenn was fired for trying to help Cheyenne get maternity leave.)
Another unused pitch involved Glenn’s (Mark McKinney) going to extreme lengths for a tasty snack. “There’s a pitch that Glenn’s favorite food is Dippin Dots, the ice cream of the future, but that the only place he knows how to get them is Six Flags,” Miller shared. “So every day before work, he goes to Six Flags, pays for a ticket, waits in line, buys Dippin Dots and then leaves. But for some reason he doesn’t buy a season pass.”
And this season, two Sandra (Kaliko Kauahi)-centric storylines ended up not entirely being used. One found the bride-to-be so stressed by her wedding she lost all her hair by the big day, and the other found Carol (Irene White) getting back at her foe in a delightfully twisted way.
“We’re all HAMILTON fans in the [writers’] room, so there was a pitch that Carol, the way that she would sabotage the wedding was by showing up at Sandra’s wedding and singing ‘Satisfied,'” co-showrunner Jonathan Green revealed. (For those not familiar with HAMILTON, the song is a bittersweet wedding toast of what could have been.)
