2020 Emmy Nominations Snubs and Surprises
July 28, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
In the midst of Peak TV, Emmy nominations are never going to get everything correct. This year’s grouping was a bit more eclectic than previous noms, but there were still a few nominees that should have been acknowledged…
- Where the heck was Aaron Paul (EL CAMINO: A BREAKING BAD MOVIE)? It’s not like BREAKING BAD was an Emmy underdog—heck, even its spinoff, BETTER CALL SAUL, consistently gets nominations—but while the series’ follow-up film got nominated, Paul, a five-time nominee and three-time winner for playing Jesse, was shut out. And that movie absolutely lived or died with Paul’s performance. A shame.
- Where was anything from BETTER THINGS?!
- While I appreciate that Seth Meyers and the writing team for LATE NIGHT got a nomination, the show has been one of the best things on television for a very long time, and it being ignored during this highly political time, where the show manages to be funny and informational (and filmed remotely now!) is ridiciulous.
- Look, I’m beyond myself thrilled that D’Arcy Carden and William Jackson Harper got nominations for THE GOOD PLACE, but a small part of me was really hoping that Timothy Olyphant would somehow nab a guest star acknowledgment for his turn in the show’s best episode of the year.
- ZOEY’S EXTRAORDINARY PLAYLIST being entirely snubbed bummed me out. It’s hard for network shows to break through at this point, but Jane Levy was ignored for her incredible showcase episode? The choreography was overlooked? Come on. (Also, justice for my beloved SUPERSTORE.)
- But a lovely surprise? Andre Braugher getting another nod for BROOKLYN NINE-NINE. Braugher has somehow never won an Emmy for his portrayal of Holt, and his last nomination was in 2016. He’s consistently been incredible, and I hope one day he gets properly reward.
- Also…who the heck saw THE MANDALORIAN nomination for Outstanding Drama Series coming???? (Truly. I don’t know if I’ve ever yelled in surprise at an Emmy nomination the way I did for that one.)
What did you think of the Emmy nominations?
