About Last Night…AMERICA’S GOT TALENT
July 29, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
Let’s talk about Tuesday night’s TV!
AMERICA’S GOT TALENT: The show has been in an extraordinarily weird position due to COVID-19, because unlike AMERICAN IDOL or THE VOICE, which were deep in their show’s production and only really had to adapt for their end stretch of shows.
AGT? The world fell apart during the auditions, and it played out on-screen as they temporarily lost Heidi Klum, then lost the audience, then went remotely produced.
For Judges Cuts, they found a good middle ground with the remaining acts as the judges (and Terry Crews) were on the backlot, while the acts filmed remotely as they either found out they would move through, were cut, or had to perform for their chance to remain with the show.
The production was well done. I appreciate that! (And certainly it feels like they’re now going to bring the remaining contestants to California, based on a comment in the show, which will make things even easier for everyone.) But given how many breaks the show has had as they’ve shifted to these new formats (it feels like it’s one week on, one week off, at this point), I really wish the glimpses of the acts had come before they were cut versus in a quick montage while they were debating. Time is moving, uh, different, during quarantine, so it would have really helped to split it out a bit more.
