Celebrating BONES’ 15th Anniversary
September 13, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
On Tuesday, September 13, 2005, BONES debuted on Fox.
The series, in many ways, defied all the odds: the little show that could moved time slots and days consistently and frequently didn’t get the respect it deserved. But the procedural series, led by David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel, still remains the longest-running live-action drama Fox has ever aired.
In honor of the show’s 15th anniversary, we’re looking back at 15 memorable pieces…and dug up a retro video you likely haven’t seen. (And, in case you missed them at the time, no one recapped the show better than Sarah Curtis.)
-
- Back when the show was celebrating its 200th episode, the cast and crew shared their memories of their very first day on set.
- When BONES was on the move (again), we picked the best episode that had aired in each time slot (up to that point).
- One of the biggest moves the show made prior to Booth and Brennan getting together? Introducing Hannah—as Booth and Brennan also struggled to adjust to reuniting professionally after time apart. Hart Hanson (with an assist from TJ Thyne) explained why this could be a good thing for the series.
-
- Few episodes were as emotionally destroying as “The Doctor in the Photo,” as Brennan over-identified with a murder victim. Writer Carla Kettner broke down the episode, including one of the biggest Booth-Brennan scenes of the series.
- When Boreanaz and Deschanel teased season 10, they previewed a huge challenge for Booth and Brennan…in one of the most hilarious ways possible.
- Booth and Brennan took a while to make their way to each other, and even then it took longer for them to finally tie the knot. When they took that step former BONES writer Karine Rosenthal returned to pen the episode, and she did a deep dive into the hour’s biggest moments.
- The season 10 premiere had one of the biggest twists of the series, as (5+ year spoiler alert?) a central character died. Stephen Nathan explained why they made the big move.
-
- And with that character death, Carla Gallo’s Daisy was arguably the most impacted. She shared some of her real life influence on the storyline and shared her own sadness over what went down.
- Not many fans can say they got engaged on the set of their favorite show, but a couple of lucky BONES viewers got that opportunity in 2014.
- So many times during the run of the show, it seemed like the end was near. Surreal to be reminded how many times the Fox bosses pointed to a potential end date, and it never happened.
- In a show full of geniuses, it gave the writers potential to tell stories in new ways—like Brennan realizing Wendell had a rare form of bone cancer thanks to a freak injury he sustained. Michael Grant Terry shared his take on the emotional arc.
- Long before Michael Peterson was bumped up to co-showrunner of the series, he utilized an episode to spotlight neurofibromatosis, a cause that was close to his heart. (Which led to Michaela Conlin’s Angela finally going undercover!)
- Things were tough for Cam when season 7 ended, but season 8 brought her a professional win and a new love.
- The squinterns were frequently sequestered in their individual episodes, only overlapping on big episodes. One of those was the incredible “The Patriot in Purgatory,” which Terry, Eugene Byrd, and Pej Vahdat previewed.
- BONES may be over, but the cast has participated in a number of virtual panels this year. In a recent one, they shared the scenes they wish they had been in and highlighted a goof that made it on-screen.
In honor of the show’s birthday, I also dug up the full, unedited speeches from the 100th episode celebration. (Complete with horrifying 2010-era flipcam quality…)
