Drew Barrymore Previews Her New Talk Show
September 14, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
THE DREW BARRYMORE SHOW launches today, making Drew Barrymore the latest high-profile star to get their own talk show.
“I am not one person, I am not one mood, I am not one thing, I am such a mixed bag myself,” Barrymore told reporters during a recent virtual press conference. “I want a show that represents all of the different things that we are interested in and have to tackle and think about and love and want to accomplish and need to laugh and get out of it. I hope that I can in some ways keep you guessing on what’s going to happen next and try and fulfill a lot of different desires.”
The series is launching in a unique time for the television industry, as production has been deeply impacted by COVID-19. As such, there won’t be an audience in the studio. However, in addition to their full New York-based set, they also have a green screen studio in Los Angeles, which will allow guests to be “beamed” into interviews with Barrymore.
“I do know that we have really challenged ourselves technologically,” she said. “And to think that an old boho hippie like me was going to pick that up and run with it is shocking even to myself. I love design, I wanted to provide a destination and a resting place for people that I thought was really elevated and a beautiful place to be. And what I really have in my goal, and what the team and I talk about every single day, is how do we mix a lot of different genres and tones and spices and variety into one show cohesively?”
Up first on the show are her former CHARLIE’S ANGELS co-stars Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu.
“Cameron and Lucy felt not stunty, ironically,” Barrymore said. “It felt like two women that I have [known the] majority of my life, who are my friends, who I have done some of [my] proudest work with. We’re all still really close and we’re all moms now. And that to me, felt like the authentic right foot out [the door]. And we all knew it when it like came up.”
Barrymore will have a mix of celebrity and human interest guests, and she acknowledged that is part of the appeal of the show for her. “I’m going to be as excited as any person who is in an audience looking at that person,” she said. “I know I’ve been in this industry my whole life, but I am not inside baseball, in fact, I’m the exact opposite. I’m just as excited to be around people of note as anyone would be…The whole team [has] really tried to keep in balance everybody’s story here; this is about real life, the real world, what is going on, stories we feel that are important to bring to the forefront. And that is a very mixed mosaic.”
“Especially for [the] premiere,” she continued. “We’re going to introduce everyone to an incredible family of essential workers, five of them, each of them essential workers, and we have a surprise in store for them, but their story, their journey, the impact they have on the world is just as important as any other aspect of the show.”
