CONNECTING: Could the Show Exist Beyond the Pandemic?
October 29, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
As television production shut down due to the global pandemic, a few shows were quickly brought together that could be filmed in the pandemic—Freeform’s LOVE IN THE TIME OF CORONA, Netflix’s SOCIAL DISTANCE, and NBC’s CONNECTING.
Of the trio, CONNECTING is the most traditional series, a comedy rather than a limited series or anthology, and if NBC opts to move forward, the creators are game to continue on with these characters.
“In a greater sense, that’s really going to be decided by the audience,” co-creator Brendan Gall says. “I think the reason NBC chose this show versus what I assume was hundreds of Zoom ideas that people had was the characters are so strong and so lovable and so fun, that there definitely could be a version of the show in a non-pandemic world.”
If the show returns for a second season, Gall admits he’s unsure about whether it would continue as-is or shift to something filmed in-person. “Unfortunately, if we’re lucky enough to do another season, I feel like we still might need to do it over Zoom,” he says. “But I don’t know. I think this could transfer very quickly…there’s a single-camera version of the show that I think is also very good, which I think NBC realized.”
CONNECTING, Thursdays, 8:30/7:30c, NBC
