About Last Night…BATWOMAN, CARD SHARKS, THE ROOKIE, and More

Let’s talk about Sunday night’s TV!
FAMILY GUY: The crazy thing about animation schedules is that there is a very good chance this flu episode was put into motion before COVID. Well, it felt timely.
BATWOMAN: The show was absolutely in a tough spot with the Kate of it all (more on that in a second), but I think Javicia Leslie is an absolutely incredible Ryan. I’m so excited to learn more about her.
But, man, I am bummed so much of the careful plotting of season 1 had to be essentially crammed into a rushed resolution as everyone Kate loved discovered she was Batwoman in her absence. If Jacob had to contend with his daughter’s vigilantism and struggle with it in real-time, instead of while mourning her “death,” it could have been so incredible. And it doesn’t feel like the show really intended to end the “Bruce” story that fast.
However, it’s not like they set up all of this stuff knowing they’d have to scramble like this. I enjoyed the premiere and am hopeful for where the show is going. I’m curious how Ryan will change the stakes, especially with Alice, since she won’t have Kate’s ties to her.
CARD SHARKS: Okay, I was delighted Shekinah won—and won so big. Good for her.
Oh my God, the teacher made me nervous. BAD BETS. She was lucky she left the game with $11,000.
THE ROOKIE: Ugh, I am so worried about Angela and her baby, but there is a tiny part of me that is hoping all of this foreshadowing is a trick and it’ll work out fine. (Let me live with my delusion, please.)
I do wonder how far they’re going to push the Stanton storyline. He clearly is a problem cop—and it’s easier to really follow through with the consequences with a cop like this when it’s someone you introduce as a non-regular—but will he be re-trained with the mindset that people with biases can be changed? Fired? Get put on a call where he isn’t talked down?
(Anyone else get a Martha-Castle vibe from Nolan and his mother?)
