When FBI returns for its first original episode in 2021 (on Sunday, January 24), it’ll have one of the biggest lead-ins of the year: the AFC Championship Game.

With that many potential new eyeballs on the show, finding the right episode to air in the slot was key. Luckily for the writers, the answer was fairly simple.

“We debated which episode would be best suited for this spot, but ultimately didn’t change our production or air schedule because we were so excited about ‘Crazy Love,’” executive producer Rick Eid explained via email. “It’s a really accurate representation of the show. Lots of action, lots of twists, lots of character-driven dilemmas…So, we didn’t really change anything.”

In the hour, the FBI team investigates a deadly shooting at a quinceañera. But things get complicated for Maggie (Missy Peregrym), when it pits her partner, OA (Zeeko Zaki) against their fellow agent—and Maggie’s new boyfriend—Nestor (Josh Segarra)

“The motive for the crime is more personal than financial,” Eid teased. “The primary obstacle to solving the case, however, is [Nestor], whom OA doesn’t like or trust.”

Beyond the special episode, there is still drama ahead. In the last episode of the CBS drama, Isobel (Alana De La Garza) allowed Vargas (David Zayas), the leader of a drug cartel, to leave custody in order to save the life of an agent. And the storyline isn’t done yet.

“Isobel hasn’t forgotten about Vargas,” Eid previewed. “Neither have her bosses. So, there’s a good chance they’ll meet again before the end of season 3.”

On a lighter note, “OA’s girlfriend, Mona (Yasmine Aker), returns,” he continued. “So does Jubal’s ex-partner/mistress from episode 2, Rina Trenholm (Kathleen Munroe). We’ll also meet the man Isobel has been dating for the past year or so. As for upcoming episodes… I think all of them are great! We do our best to make sure they’re topical, exciting and, most importantly, character-driven.”

FBI, Special Night, Sunday, January 24, 10/9c, 7 PM PT, CBS
