CHICAGO FIRE Boss Teases the Unconventional ‘My Lucky Day’
February 1, 2021 by Marisa Roffman
On the Wednesday, February 3 episode of CHICAGO FIRE, a routine call takes a horrifying turn when Herrmann (David Eigenberg) and Cruz (Joe Minoso) find themselves trapped in an elevator—in a burning building.
“The two of them [are] in a circumstance that you’ve never seen on this show before,” executive producer Derek Haas previews. “This episode [is] really different from anything we’ve ever done before—it’s almost like a play. There’ll be some new news in Cruz’s life in that episode. But it’s a real showcase for Minoso and Eigenberg.”
With all aspects of television having to evolve and adjust due to COVID-19 restrictions, Haas acknowledges that taking a swing like this was due in part to current production realities.
“It was definitely inspired by, ‘Let’s try to do something different with fewer characters and just see what we could do,'” he says. “And then when you get these kind of challenges as writers, it just uncorks your creativity in a way that I think probably wouldn’t have happened had there not been a pandemic. And I think we got the okays through our network and studio partners a little easier than maybe we would have in the middle of a normal season. [But] I think people are going to love it.”
