THE SIMPSONS, THE EQUALIZER, THE ROOKIE

THE SIMPSONS: Bart becomes a successful caddy, but Marge worries it is ruining his character in the ìWad Goalsî episode of THE SIMPSONS airing Sunday, Feb. 28 (8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT) on FOX. Guest voice Stephen Root. THE SIMPSONS © 2021 by 20th Television.

Let’s talk about Sunday night’s TV!

THE SIMPSONS: I struggled a bit with this episode, frankly, because of the show’s own history. It’s hard when a show is on for thirty years and the characters often evolve, even if they don’t age/they aren’t supposed to grow that much. But one of the most memorable episodes of the show’s early years was Marge’s desperate quest to fit in at a country club. For her to be leading the charge to try and shut things down—because she worried Bart was sucking up?—just rang as odd. (Though she would accidentally gather an anti-SJW army in a petition.)

THE EQUALIZER: The “Bad Boys” singalong as Mel and Harry watched the footage of cops? Perfect. Mel sniping things and making it seem like Robyn had guns in her glove? Brilliant. So much of this episode was just fun. I’m really enjoying this show so much.

AMERICAN IDOL: Ronda Felton was incredible. I was less impressed by Erika Perry and Christian McGuckian, but I hope they surprise me going forward.

THE GREAT NORTH: It’s wrong to be hungry because of an animated appetizer plate, right?

I love how warm this show’s heart is. Judy trying to set up Beef in order to jump start her own love life was funny—but it also allowed the to have a serious conversation about her mom leaving. (Also…that kissing mishap is a thing of teenage nightmares and I hope that’s not a true story from a poor writer.)

BOB’S BURGERS: I know this was supposed to be a delayed holiday episode to begin with, but—as much as I love the show—it happening on the verge of it being March still read as too late.

FAMILY GUY: Oh lord, Stewie’s face…

THE ROOKIE: Oh my God, I loved this episode. The show has been incredible at doing the serious stuff, but this lighter episode was fantastic. Tim and Lucy bantering during their joint interview? Yes, please. Rainn Wilson as an extra eccentric version of himself? So delightfully bizarre.

I really love that this show can be so many things: it can be a weird docuseries homage one week, while tackling significantly more serious issues the next. I appreciate shows with elastic tones.
