She’s back!
Though it was no secret America Ferrera was returning for SUPERSTORE’s finale, Ferrera’s Amy popped up even earlier than planned—at the very end of the antepenultimate episode, “Lowell Anderson.”
Unfortunately for the Cloud 9 employees, it wasn’t exactly for a good reason: Lowell Anderson (Dave Foley), the son of the Cloud 9 founder, told them that there were rumors Zephra was looking to close stores. So get better insight into what was going on, Cheyenne (Nichole Sakura) reached out to Amy—who is now working for the corporate bosses—to find out what was going on.
“When we first found out the show had been canceled and were trying to get America back, we didn’t know if with her schedule, she’d be able to do more than one episode,” co-showrunner Jonathan Green told reporters. “And so we were just really hoping that we wouldn’t have to [squeeze everything in to a single episode]…it definitely helped to spread it out over the two episodes.”
And once they were able to get her for those episodes, “we thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be a great sort of throw forward to reveal her at the end of the ‘Lowell Anderson’ episode?'” he continued. “[It] give us some forward momentum going into those last two [episodes].”
Though Lowell brought mayhem to the store, it was a lovely reunion for Foley with his KIDS IN THE HALL co-star Mark McKinney, who plays Glenn—and a guest spot a long time coming.
“[Foley] came and visited the set second or third season, and I think after that, I mentioned to [SUPERSTORE creator] Justin [Spitzer], ‘I think he’d be a really good character, we have chemistry, he’s funny,'” McKinney recalled. “But it was a total surprise when he finally showed up, I was really thrilled. It was fun. It was weird. It’s a strange thing going on, as I’m in season 6 of one show, but we had a couple of scenes together and we click back into KIDS IN THE HALL rhythms.”
