CHICAGO MED: Brian Tee and Steven Weber on Ethan and Dean’s Tension

As CHICAGO MED’s Dean (Steven Weber) continues his tenure at the hospital, the tension with Ethan (Brian Tee)–who previously served below Dean in the Navy—grows, as the duo try to navigate their new working relationship.

“Clearly it’s a blow to his ego. He’s an old-school guy…and he’s subordinate now to a superior surgeon,” Weber told reporters in the video below. “The mentor is now being taught by the student…it’s an interesting dynamic that the writers have inserted, that’s fairly universal for people of a certain age. They’ve got to understand that they’re no longer at the crest of the wave anymore. It’s something that I am wrestling with as an actor of a certain age who has been around a long time.”

Complicating matters is where their history steams from. “The characters themselves are both from the military, actually serving under the same kind of battalion,” Tee acknowledged. “I would say in the military, the hierarchy is the utmost and the foremost, as far as the relationship factors are concerned. So when you flip it, it literally smashes this conflict between the two. And I think that’s what you see, as we’re trying to feel through certain medical situations, relationships situations, or even the dynamic between us—we’re really trying to figure out how to work with one another when the dynamics of our relationship are completely flipped upside down.”
