CHICAGO P.D.: Tracy Spiridakos and Jesse Lee Soffer Tease Upstead Drama
April 6, 2021 by Marisa Roffman
Though CHICAGO P.D.’s Upstead has been progressing mostly off-screen since they coupled up, the duo’s relationship takes center stage in the Wednesday, April 7 hour, “Signs of Violence.”
“We can’t always service this relationship or that relationship in a given episode—you got to just kind of trust, as the viewer that it’s going on behind the scenes,” Jesse Lee Soffer (who plays Halstead) acknowledged in the video below. “I don’t think you’re going to see any characters holding hands in the bullpen, while they’re at work.”
But “they’re in a good place, and I think at this point it’s been fairly manageable for her to balance their two worlds of work and relationship,” Tracy Spiridakos (who plays Upton) said via email. “However, that is about to change.”
In the hour, Upton throws herself into a case involving a missing girl—in part due to an unexpected confession from Halstead.
“Hailey doesn’t do well with vulnerability and while she does love Jay, after he says it, it sends her into a spiral with the inability to differentiate personal from work,” Spiridakos admitted. “She buries herself in a case and avoids him for as long as she can. What could possibly go wrong?“
For Halstead, he worries about his girlfriend’s reaction to his confession and her own personal ties to the case, given her past familial trauma.
“You’ll see the struggle of what it is to be a cop dating a cop on the job, and the difficulties that can come up,” Soffer said. “Or the questions that you might ask, or the doubts you might have, and whether or not you can handle doing both.”
Unfortunately for Upton, her problems spill into work, too. As the team tries to track down the missing girl, she proposes they use ICE as a tool to threaten someone they need to talk. In the exclusive clip below, Voight (Jason Beghe) shuts the idea down, but Upton pushes back.
“We’ve crossed worse lines before,” Upton argues.
“Did you not hear me say no?” Voight fires back.
Yep, things are tense…

I really don’t get this “happening offscreen” stuff, I mean, we don’t get to watch that show, we can only watch the ones that air in that hour, once a week. I hear when they say it can’t be played out every episode, but it was dismissed 6 episodes in a row, it borders indifference. And thinking that viewers wanna see hand hold during work hours in order to service a relationship, they clearly don’t know us. Both we and they are better than clichés to tell us the relationship is there.
I Love the show! I love all the characters! I miss Al! “Mr. Mysterious” I used to call him! Keep up the great work!
Hi I love Jay and Hailey together romantically I hope they
get married.
Please don’t tell me that HAILEY and Jay are going to break up !! We have been waiting all year for this. So far we really haven’t seen 😕 much of both of them together , we’ve seen a lot of Burgess and Ruzek now we get to see HAILEY and Jay together and it doesn’t look good!!!!! SO DISAPPOINTED 😟
Best best show ever! It’s the only TV I watch and anything else I’m watching repeats love it!
My favorite show only reason i have cable
First & Foremost, …. I Love Chicago P.D. and I miss AL and Erin. However, Haley Does Nothing For Me. I Personally Know A Few “Real” Police Officers And The Female Officers I Know Don’t Sleep Around Like They Are Portrayed On Chicago P.D. With Their Fellow Officers.
Also, When Is Atwater Going To Get A “Love Interest”? I Love Burgess And I’m A Huge Fan of Her, But Even She Has Been To Bed With Three Guys On The Show. Atwater Had One Brief Fling And She Ended Up Going To Jail On The Episode That I Saw.
So, Find Out If You Can, When Is Atwater Going To Get Some Serious Action!!!!
Thank You For Allowing Me To Express My Comments.
