WYNONNA EARP: Melanie Scrofano and Tim Rozon on (Probably) Saying Goodbye to the Cult Classic
April 9, 2021 by Marisa Roffman
Over the past five years, WYNONNA EARP has had one hell of a journey.
Over the course of the show’s first three seasons, the Syfy series built up a core base of devoted fans—affectionately known as Earpers—who devoured every moment of Wynonna Earp (Melanie Scrofano), Doc Holliday (Tim Rozon), and WayHaught’s (portrayed by Dominique Provost-Chalkey and Katherine Barrell) epic romance.
However, before production on season 4 could start, things were delayed due to financial difficulties at the show’s studio, and the series’ future was very much up in the air. Finally, they were able to start production in early 2020, before everything was shut down due to the global pandemic.
While the first part of season 4 was able to run in Summer 2020, the second batch of episodes was delayed until 2021…after Syfy made the call to cancel the show.
But…can WYNONNA EARP ever be counted out?
“I have to act like it’s the end, because it’s just too much for me to get my hopes up,” Scrofano admitted to reporters in the video below. “You act like the end, you can mourn it, and then if something good happens, then great…especially right now during COVID, when everything is uncertain, we have no sense of certainty and peace; I just need to act like I have one answer. So for me, it’s been really important, maybe more important in the context of 2021, to say it’s over. If it’s not, great, but let’s act like it [is].”
With the circumstances less than ideal Rozon acknowledged he was soaking the experience in when going back to film the final batch of season 4 episodes. “‘This might be it; it really might be it,'” he recalled thinking. “I’m super proud of what we’ve done over the four years, so that helps a lot in saying goodbye. [Series creator] Emily [Andras] knows, call me tomorrow, I’ll grow a mustache or whatever.”
But he will fiercely miss the opportunities this show allowed. “Man, it’s going to be a minute before I get a Doc Holliday against a Wynonna,” he said. “But I’m also very grateful. Four seasons is not nothing. We have four incredible seasons of television, with a fandom that hopefully we’ll continue to go on without the show.”
