PRODIGAL SON returns on Tuesday, April 13 with Bright (Tom Payne) in one heck of a bind: criminal profiler Simon Hoxley (Alan Cumming) comes to New York determined to get to the bottom of Nicholas Endicott’s (Dermot Mulroney) death—which Bright’s sister, Ainsley (Halston Sage), committed.

“From the beginning of the season we really wanted to do a profiler versus profiler episode,” PRODIGAL SON co-creator Chris Fedak says. “And so we started building the character of Simon Hoxley pretty early in the season and thinking about how we were going to bring him into the story. We couldn’t have imagined anyone more fun and more exciting than Alan Cumming playing the part.”

With the entire Whitly family involved, at this point, in covering up Endicott’s death, that allows for Simon to make his way through the characters—something the writers were very conscious of.

“We knew that when we had Alan, our cast would would be furious with us if we didn’t give them each an opportunity to have a scene with him,” Fedak says with a laugh. “So it was really just the chance for us to write really fun dueling dialogue between Alan and the PRODIGAL team.”

The characters, however, are less thrilled to find themselves in Hoxley’s crosshairs.

“Hoxley is a good adversary, for Bright and Martin, and everyone in the family,” admits co-creator Sam Sklaver. “This isn’t just some run-of-the-mill detective. We had so much fun with Alan shaping this character, figuring him out, and planning all the different spinoffs that we want to do with this character in the future, because we loved him so much. We can’t wait for everyone to see him.”

“He’s excellent his job,” adds Fedak. “That’s a tough spot when you have a very fancy detective from Europol coming in to try to figure out what actually happened to Nicholas Endicott. And it’s incredibly difficult, not only for Martin and Jessica, but specifically for Bright, because let’s be honest, Bright is a good person who wants to solve crimes and do the right thing. But he also found himself in this morally sticky situation, which Sam and I have a tendency to put our characters, where he had to protect his sister from a terrible man.”

“So, in keeping with that, Bright is not only trying to get away and deceive Simon Hoxley, but also to solve a real murder, because there is a true killer in the city,” Fedak continues. “Even though this case has someone getting under the hood with the Whitly family, it also has a murder that needs to be solved.”

How perfectly PRODIGAL SON!
