After being desperate to reconnect with Clarice (Rebecca Breeds) in a meaningful way, Catherine (Marnee Carpenter) gets her wish, when Ruth (Jayne Atkinson) invites the agent over for dinner.
“It’s a doozy,” Carpenter previews with a laugh. “It’s no-holds-barred, and they’re all going for it, and sticking to their guns. All three of them are coming from very different places, so it definitely makes for some good tension, and even some humor. It’s definitely heated, and none of them take it lightly.”
As the women come from different perspectives—Catherine, to reunite with Clarice; Ruth, hoping her daughter snaps out of her trauma; and Clarice, looking to be able to do her job—they have to walk a delicate line with each other.
For Catherine, “what I really love about her, is that she’s just always coming in from the standpoint of truth and honesty, no matter how uncomfortable that is,” Carpenter says. “So I think she’s certainly not about to play politics, she’s going to lay it all out there. Clarice, with the position she is in, she’s obviously navigating her career at the same time that she is sitting next to someone she’s shared this trauma with. So there’s a bit of game play there.”
“We always have a sense of Ruth having some kind of agenda,” she continues. “And I think Catherine is just done with agenda; done with political red tape and just not facing up to what’s going on. She’s all for it. So I love that about her. As difficult as her like is at this point and how very present the trauma is for her. I think her only comfort is making sure she’s sticking to the truth and being seen.”
CLARICE, Thursdays, 10/9c, CBS
