CHICAGO P.D. Post-Mortem: Marina Squerciati and LaRoyce Hawkins on ‘The Right Thing’ Cliffhanger

[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the May 19 episode of CHICAGO P.D.]

CHICAGO P.D. took a brutal turn in its penultimate episode of season 8, as Samantha Miller’s (Nicole Ari Parker) son was killed—and the hour concluded with Burgess (Marina Squerciati) being attacked.

“I will say that we shoot some scenes on the CHICAGO MED stage [for the season finale],” Squerciati teases in the video below. “So it’s gonna get pretty messy in the season finale.”

And the team won’t be coping with the situation well.

“Burgess was the perfect person to challenge the way the team [worries] differently, grows differently,” LaRoyce Hawkins (who plays Atwater) says in the video below. “Because we all have to grow through it. And some of us do it a lot differently than others. That’s the part that challenges us, because sometimes, especially when it’s somebody you love so much, it’s hard to separate emotion from intention.”

“That’s [the spot] the team finds themselves in,” he continues. “I think that’s what creates the soft divide. You will find some of the team on one end of progress and some of the team on the back end of progress, in a way that nobody knows exactly how it’s going to end up.”

And the impact will be far-reaching. “The season finale is mind-blowing,” Squerciati gushes. “There’s not one person that can come out unscathed. And I think Intelligence will look different next year. It’s pretty dirty.”
