The CW Boss Explains Why They’re Reworking POWERPUFF
May 25, 2021 by Marisa Roffman
When The CW announced its 2021-2022 new show orders, a high-profile project was MIA: POWERPUFF, the live-action series inspired by the animated show by the same name.
In the potential series, according to The CW, “The Powerpuff Girls used to be America’s pint-sized superheroes, now they’re disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?”
The show, from writers Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody, based on Craig McCracken’s creation, would have starred Chloe Bennet as Blossom, Dove Cameron as Bubbles, and Yana Perrault as Buttercup. The pilot also stars Donald Faison as Professor Drake Utonium, Nicholas Podany as Jojo Mondel, and Robyn Lively as Sara Bellum. As the network reworks it, the plan is to keep all the key pieces in place.
“The reason we do pilots is sometimes things miss,” Mark Pedowitz, Chairman & CEO, The CW, said in a call with reporters. “And this was just a miss. We believe in the cast, we believe in the cast completely. We believe in Diabo and Heather, the writers. We believe in the auspices….in this case, the pilot didn’t work. But because we see enough elements in there, we wanted to give it another shot.”
“The pilot felt a little too campy, and didn’t feel as rooted in reality as it might have felt,” he continued. “But again, you learn things when you test things out. And so in this case, we felt let’s take a step back and go back to the drawing board. This is a powerful property, it has engaged a lot of interest. And we want to get it right and figure it out.”
